Problem

Comparing ground measurements with Landsat surface reflectance means knowing when the satellite passes and then finding the right pixel — tedious for non-specialists.

Solution

A designed web app (Figma prototype plus planned Django architecture): users save locations on a map, choose notification lead time and channel (email, SMS, push), get alerts before an overpass and when data is ready, then view a 3×3 pixel grid with metadata and spectral signature, filter by cloud cover and export CSV or PDF. Accessibility is specified (WCAG 2.1, localization, offline cache).

Why it stood out

  • organizer statedWon the award for the most plausible concept and design.Source ↗
  • organizer statedProvides a simple, intuitive way to track Landsat satellites, access surface reflectance data, set a target location and receive overpass notifications.Source ↗
  • team statedDesigned for users of all technical levels and abilities, with concrete use cases for farmers, conservation researchers and urban planners.Source ↗
  • curator inferenceThe concept award rewarded a complete, accessible design that follows the challenge brief closely, even though the deliverable was a prototype rather than running software.

Lessons for your next hackathon

  • A thorough design with use cases and accessibility can win the concept award without a deployed build.
  • Answer every clause of the brief (location, notification, data access) visibly in the design.
